Artrepreneur x FAIRE

Finalist

Open Call Submission Contest

Theme: Compassion

... As I arrive into a near-deserted Piazza San Marco, I remember how easy it is for my own practice to slip — how easy it is to fall back into believing ourselves unworthy of that forgiving compassion in the first place.
— Excerpt Ruth Steadman, Stories of Salt & Starlight, Issue 6

Our winning open call submission for Issues 5 of FAIRE by Isolde Lehrmann

FAIRE is absolutely thrilled to have such a formidable partner in Artrepreneur, an online platform for artists, designers, collectors, and anyone who has a love for art and design.

We recently launched an ‘Open Call Contest’ to select a work of art to accompany Faire’s column “Stories of Salt and Starlight”, written by Ruth Steadman for our Issue 6 which will be published in July 2022.

We were overwhelmed by the incredible response and relished discovering so many wonderful creatives. We are thrilled to announce our finalist as selected with the help and guidance of our partners Artrepreneur, our panel of industry creatives and writer Ruth Steadman.

Our Finalist

Melissa Haupt

Melissa Haupts submitted this winning photograph, titled ‘Morning Stillness’.

Her work was chosen by our columnist Ruth Steadman with the support and vote of FAIRE editor-in-chief Ruth Ribeaucourt and our panel of creative industry leaders including Kim Klassen, Aimee Twigger and Kate Devine.

I realise this is an obvious choice, but perhaps this is also its timeless strength. To capture Piazza San Marco entirely empty is a creative endeavour in and of itself, and I love the shared sentiment of early morning departures she captures so keenly.
— Ruth Steadman

We are honoured to publish Melissa’s photograph opposite storyteller Ruth Steadman’s column, ‘Stories of Salt & Starlight’ inside issue 6.

Melissa Haupt is an American travel and still life photographer based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Whether travelling the world capturing people and their cultures or shooting evocative still-life tableaux at home, Melissa’s photography always endeavours to capture moments of grace and beauty in the world.

Although Ruth Steadman’s column deals with questions of self-doubt and grappling with the destabilizing strangeness of familiarity, I see it as fundamentally hopeful. Because Melissa Haupt’s photography was taken at dawn, it strikes me as an apt metaphor for the birth of a new sense of self and relationship with others as we move toward a post-pandemic world. With all of the darkness in the world at the moment, we could use a little light.
