WEAVING POTTERY
Here is a snippet of Emma Cassi’s feature in the print magazine, as she discusses the meaning behind the woven bowls and her creative evolution in response to the constraints of COVID 19.
“In 2019, I started making pottery. I loved the creative process and was taking a class, but just as I was getting into the flow, we had to stop because of the Covid-19 lockdown in the U.K. So I immersed myself into learning at home. I continued shaping pots and bowls in my studio by hand, trying to get used to the movement of coiling. I would work with clay, but not having access to a kiln, it became quite frustrating not to be able to fire my pieces. One day while looking around my atelier, I noticed the threads and textile remnants of my jewellery making, and it sparked the idea to weave and mould pots from textiles…”
“…The coil is the oldest known symbol in spiritual practices. It is said to reflect the universal pattern of growth and evolution and to represent the goddess, the womb, fertility, and life force energy. Reflected in the natural world, the spiral is seen in human physiology, plants, minerals, animals, energy patterns, weather, growth, and death. It is a sacred symbol…”
