Wayne Pate & Rebecca Taylor
Issue 11 Sneak Peak
In 2020, just before the world shut down, American artist Wayne Pate and his wife, fashion designer Rebecca Taylor, saw an opportunity to take a much-needed pause and change of perspective and moved to New Zealand to be closer to family. Together, they’ve found a way to slow down and savour life, raising their young family away from the bustle of a big city. Collaborators in life as well as creativity, Rebecca recently launched a small clothing label, A’COURT, as an antidote to the voracious traditional fashion model.

“My life had been so busy for so long that I rarely had time to think about the future. The future was just something that happened, and then, just as quickly, it became the past, disappearing in the rearview mirror.”
“As our home is also our studio, the children have grown up with it and are constantly around fabrics, paints and canvases. It’s a bit like second-hand smoke – if you’re in the vicinity, you’re going to inhale it! Clearing materials from the dining table for family dinners and the occasional heated conversation is a common occurrence.”
“I’ve been an artist for more than 30 years, but I wouldn’t say that it gets easier or that I’m more comfortable these days, as there always seem to be multiple protagonists tugging at me. But that is a good thing. It keeps me from getting too complacent.”
