Sarah Andrews
Sarah Andrews is the creative force behind the celebrated Captain’s Rest in Tasmania, an award-winning heritage-listed property that has gone on to become one of the world’s most sought-after rental lodgings. In 2008, Sarah left behind a career in spatial science to embark on a solo sailing trip in the Pacific. After a year or two of sailing and living on her boat, she was shipwrecked off the coast of Mexico.
This challenging, scary, life-altering experience upended her plans. Once she was home in Australia she purchased a small, rundown waterfront shack and Captain’s Rest was born. Sarah has gone on to become a respected interior designer, stylist and teacher, leading thousands of students across the world through her Hosting Masterclass series. Her love of storytelling has led her to write and publish two beautiful lifestyle books, The Principles of Style (Simon & Schuster, 2021) and The Poetry of Spaces: Creating Meaningful Interiors (Hardie and Grant, 2023), which combine her passions for art, design, storytelling, science, interiors, adventure and poetry.
“Navigating my own inner world somehow to its final destination was an odyssey I was prepared to endure, even into the terrifying confines of home ownership.”
“But what I have learned is that while on the surface, wanderlust and domesticity might seem to be at odds, where you might feel you need to choose one or the other, they are both part of a fundamental human need.”
“I decided that a remote fishing cabin perched on the water would serve as a great spot to rest, have my mail sent to me and keep the few things that I owned that I didn’t need to travel with.”
