Katharina Herold, Holiday Gift Guide

For the art lover

The daughter of renowned gallerist Rainer Herold, German/Scottish art curator Katharina Herold grew up surrounded by art. After receiving her master’s degree in art history from University College of London, she immersed herself into the London art scene by working at Christie’s auction house, Mallett Antiques, and Masterpiece London Art Fair in London.

In 2014, Katharina returned to Germany, to the island of Sylt, where she opened a second branch of her family’s gallery, Galerie Herold. Established by Katharina’s father in Hamburg in 1978, Galerie Herold specialises in Northern German impressionism, expressionism, and contemporary art, and curates art, interiors, and antiques exhibitions. Katharina ran the Sylt gallery for more than four years before launching her independent art and design consultancy agency, Heroldian Art Concepts.

Based in Hamburg, Heroldian Art Concepts specialises in unique art concepts for interior spaces, helping both private and commercial clients discover, invest in, and style art collections that fit their interests, lifestyle, or industry.

We are thrilled to share the wonderful goodies that are topping Katharina’s personal gift wish list this year.

Après Ski

Their jewellery is like a modern interpretation of Etruscan jewellery, which to me, remains the most skilful jewellery of all time.

These beauties are light as feathers made of gold plated silver sheet so they are super comfortable to wear.

Paula knits her magical designs on commission

‘Little Knightess Vest’ might be my favourite. It reminds me of the colourful and quirky knits that my mum used to dress me in, in the late 80s. Mind you I was already picking my own clothes then.

I‘ve only drooled over this publication from afar, so I hope my friends and family read this list carefully.… ;-)

A visit to the Musée Chasse et Nature in Paris

One fine day strolling through Paris I stumbled across this gem of a museum. If you are not offended by taxidermy then I highly recommend this museum. It is housed in a beautiful 17th Century building with stunning details such as for example a bronze cast branch as a handrail.

They often showcase living artists that work with natural materials, creating an interesting juxtaposition to Old Master paintings.

Glamping experience Mallorca

I think this is the only official ‘campsite’ on the Island. They often collaborate with creators from all different sectors to ensure a unique experience. Check their schedule…

The Miró Eye by Jean Marie del Moral

This book by photographer Jean Marie del Moral focuses on the collection of objects gathered by Joan Miró. I am always so curious about what people surround themselves with and what they attach meaning to regardless of the items supposed monetary value. Therefore I think the idea of this publication is wonderful, it gives us another personal insight into the mind of the great artist Joan Miró.

Heroldian Art Collector

Not to blow my own trumpet but… I think artwork is a great Christmas gift. I find it is meaningful and something that will be treasured for life. I start at a budget of 200 Euros for original artwork and I am happy to search for the right work for a loved one.

This might sound a bit silly but I love to be gifted something that I need but can’t be bothered to spend money on. These are usually tools or utensils that are expensive. So maybe ask your close ones what they need but don’t have. It might not be the most romantic but practical for sure.

A good power drill - perfect for when you need to hang paintings or mount shelves - here is a great round up of the best drills of 2021

A good affordable, lightweight hammer, such as the Irwin 1954889 16-Ounce Claw Hammer is another essential for any home.

A good old fashioned enamelled crockpot by Staub or Le Creuset. Timeless and built to last a lifetime.

And last but not least physical gifts are nice but Christmas to me is mostly about being with the family and also thinking of less fortunate people. There are numerous charities out there with individual causes that you can gift.

Since it’s quite overwhelming to pick just one, I like to think about what resonates on a personal level with me or the individual you are gifting it to.

In the past, I have supported One Dollar Glasses who ensure that everyone has access to eyeglasses. As a four-eyed child imagining not having access to visual aids for me is inconceivable. There is Women for Women who support and educate women in high-risk countries. The cup foundation support and empower underprivileged girls in sexual education and reproductive rights.

Just to name a few.
